The 1930 Mary E.J. Colter Depot

The building Affledt Mion Museum calls home was designed in 1930 by Mary Colter for the Santa Fe Railway as their Winslow Arizona depot–part of her plans for the buildings and grounds at La Posada Hotel. The depot itself is an important part of the Affeldt Mion Museum collection and something to be appreciated.

The depot opened May 15, 1930 along with La Posada, to which it is attached by a long Spanish revival arcade.

Nearly everything is original, from the massive beams and Spanish tile roof, to the concrete floors and ornate radiator grilles.

Mary Colter Depot Rehabilitation

When Allan bought La Posada in 1997 the depot–included in the sale–was leased to AMTRAK as their Winslow waiting room. By 2010 the depot was Mary Colter’s only building that had not been knocked down or restored.

Allan began working with friends Max Licher, Bill Otwell, and Kristy TenEyck on plans to convert the depot into a museum.

A 1960’s Santa Fe Railway addition on the east side was removed and replaced with a modern gallery for contemporary art. The baggage room was redesigned with a north clerestory window specifically to house the Hubbell-Joe Rug.

The $2 million restoration was completed in 2018 with major support from Allan Affeldt and Tina Mion, City of Winslow, and NACOG Northern Arizona Council of Governments.
