Throughout La Posada Hotel, Dan Lutzick has created a series of small arrays in conjunction with his show at Affeldt Mion Museum, LUTZICK SNOWDRIFT ARRAYS. The installation of the show is in progress, and will open in November 2025. Lutzick Snowdrift Arrays will run through November 2026 in the Winslow Studio Artists Gallery. Read more about the show, here.

The Satellite Arrays

The Satellite Arrays can be found in various nooks and crannies around the property. The first has been installed. The second is in progress.

LSA Satellite #1: EAST WING STAIRWELL

In the stairwell connecting the lower east wing to the upper Mion Art Space, you’ll find a niche, and in that niche, three rabbits.

These three rabbit figures have haunted various parts of my studio for the last thirteen years. Sometimes I have separated them into different parts of Snowdrift, but I notice that they always seem to reform as a trinity every time I move things around.

As with most of my sculptures these figures started out as failures. They were a series of simple rabbit heads without bodies that I never completed in 2010. One day (in early 2012) I suddenly realized I could add a body, and arrange them in a little group, and they would address the viewer in a more powerful way. There is a history to the wood used to create these sculptures. The black and gray paint identifies this salvaged plywood as part of the pigeon screen that surrounded the El Garces Hotel in Needles, California. I worked on that restoration project from 2002 to 2009 and kept a studio in the basement of that building.

Also in that niche with the Rabbits, you’ll see a can filled with plywood figures.

More recently, I was gifted the small Snowdrift Shortening can from a friend in Las Vegas, NM. I immediately saw it as a container with a small array of little plywood symbols that reflect the objects you would find in my Snowdrift Art Space. The rabbit head is included in this little collection of objects.
