The Hubbell-Joe Rug Gallery features Affeldt Mion Museum’s key exhibit, the Hubbell-Joe Rug: The largest known hand-carded and hand-woven Navajo rug, on loan from the Winslow Art’s Trust. The gallery was the former baggage room of the 1930, redesigned specifically for this exhibit; an exhibit ten years in the making. The main space features images of master-weaver Julia Joe and her family, taken in Greasewood Arizona in 1937 upon completion of the rug.

Hubbell-Joe Rug Gallery Entry

The entry to the gallery features the story of the rug, along with weaving artifacts and the history of Navajo weaving. From this entry, you can see the backside of the cantilevered wall built to support the rug and provide a better viewing experience, and a worktable that was built at the Hubbell Trading Post in 1917.

Take note also of the original baggage scale in the room and the sculptural winch built by artist John Suttman, who also built the cantilevered wall and railings.
